The city of Recife is the capital, and largest city, in the state of Pernambuco with a population in excess of 1.6 million. The wider metropolitan area has nearly 4 million inhabitants and is the fifth largest in Brazil. The city of Recife has its own racecourse, although it is less well known than Cidade Jardim or Sao Vincente.
